Antique silver naturally oxidises over time when exposed to oxygen, forming a darkened surface known as patina. This gradual oxidation is what gives vintage and archival silver its depth, contrast, and character.

Each MAABAE piece is intentionally finished using a specialised oxidizer ion process after plating to create this vintage-inspired darkened finish. This process enhances the shadows and textures of the design and gives every piece its antique look. Your jewellery will continue to oxidise naturally over time.

Cultural Expression

For centuries, the Saptamatrikas, or “Seven Mothers,” have held a powerful place in Indian religious art, appearing across temple sculpture, architecture, manuscripts, and adornment. Traditionally depicted as a group of seven mother goddesses, they are associated with protection, strength, fertility, and divine feminine power. Their imagery has often been carried as a protective symbol, with silver pendants and amulets serving as objects of blessing and devotion, passed down through generations.

Inspired by a 100-year-old Saptamatrika pendant from our archival collection, we reimagined the seven figures through a distinctly MAABAE lens. Rather than recreating the goddesses literally, we distilled their essence into our own Maa and Beti motif, representing a mother and daughter and the passing of culture, craftsmanship, and identity from one generation to the next. The motif became the foundation for our custom stamp, transforming an archival symbol of feminine power into something personal, contemporary, and distinctly our own.

Our design language is rooted in this idea. Inspired by the heritage of archival silver and reimagining it through a modern lens for today’s wardrobe. I’ve always been drawn to the history held in old-world jewelry - its weight, its patina, its soul.
